Homework in First Grade

Homework in first grade is be given with the intention of connecting school and home, reinforcing skills and concepts learned in class. It will also serve to establish consistent study habits. Doing homework in first grade should be approximately 10 minutes a day.

Weekly Work Schedule

A weekly homework packet will go home once a week. It will have a variety of assignments to complete. The assignments can be completed in any order. I suggest that your kiddo does one assignment each day, along with the tried-and-true family reading time (15-20 minutes a day).

A weekly homework sample agenda might have assignments like this:
reading passages (parents, please initial)
phonics work
spelling words
handwriting practice
Math practice
Reading log (15-20 minutes of reading a day)
Show-and-tell item when requested

Spelling quiz information
There are 10 words on the spelling quiz (and one sentence as students progress).
The max score is 12 points (1 point for student's name spelled correctly using only one uppercase letter, 1 point for correct date, plus 10 spelling words). A score of 8 points hits the proficiency mark.
Nonsense words do serve a purpose! I know, it's weird, but they help teachers gauge students' ability to encode sounds and are also helpful in decoding more complex words. (E.g. Knowing "lin" will help a kid with words such as "sling," "linen," "linoleum" and even "multilingual" down the road.)

Homework is sent home every THURSDAY.
Homework packets are due on the following THURSDAY.
We will have a weekly spelling quiz every THURSDAY.

The school-wide homework policy at TISA is as follows. Students who are not completing their homework or need support with their studies will be required to stay in reading lab after school. Homework will be also reflected on your child's progress report.

Thank you for supporting your children with their important learning milestones this year!
